5 Color Word Activities Your Students Will Love
You’ve probably heard it a million times. Ideally, learning should be fun!
The goal is to get kids interested, inspired, and engaged in the lesson. Hands-on activities and experiences are at the core of learning. They’re the hook that pulls in our kids’ interest.
Thankfully, there are tons of hands-on color word activities. Seriously, colors are the ideal topic for hands-on learning!
Here are 5 easy color word activities that you can do in your classroom tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow. They really are that simple!
Color Word Activity #1 – Color Dress Up Days
Plan color theme days. Introduce the color word and do an art project focused on that color. Make and wear color crowns. Encourage students to wear at least one thing with the day’s color or bring in an object from home that’s the color of the day. You could even plan a taste test or snack that features the color of the day.
Activity #2 – Spin, Write, & Paint
This is a fun way to practice reading, writing, and spelling the color words. Students use a paperclip and pencil to make a spinner. They spin a color and then use a white crayon to write it. Finally, they paint over it to reveal the word. They can then check it against the spinner and see if they wrote it correctly. It’s lots of fun!
Color Word Activity #3 – Salt Painting
This activity is intriguing. You’ll need to prep one sheet of paper for each student by writing the color word in large letters with school glue. Cover the word in salt while the glue is wet. Once it’s dry, the kids will dab the salt with watercolor paint and watch the color spread throughout the word. How cool! You could even paint secondary colors with both colors and watch them mix.
Activity #4 – Stamp And Spell With Dough
Another hands-on activity for color words is stamping out the words with alphabet stamps on playdough. Then, trace and write each color word with a dry-erase marker. It’s a great center or morning work activity.
Color Word Activity #5 – Write the Room
Get your kids up and moving with a write the room activity. Each kid will need a clipboard, a pencil, and a recording sheet. Spread the picture cards out throughout the room. Your students will find the cards, locate the matching picture on the recording sheet, and write the color word. They can then color the pictures once they’ve found all the words.
There you have it! Your color words unit can be exciting when you use hands-on activities.
Enjoy exploring the wonderful world of colors and color words with your little learners.
