5 Safety Rules Every Kid Should Learn At School
Have you seen a kid crying at the grocery store because they got separated from their grown-up?
My heart hurts just thinking about all the times that kids don’t know what to do.
You can’t expect students to know what to do if they’ve never been taught. So, it’s essential to teach kids basic safety rules.
Every kid should learn these five safety rules at school.
Safety Rule #1 – Kids need to know their full names.
Kids need to know their full names. It takes a moment to figure out which Emma missed her bus if there are 67 Emmas, and the only information you have is her first name. If Emma can tell you she’s Emma Johnson in kindergarten, it’s going to be a lot easier to look up her contact information. Outside school, it becomes even more important for each kid to know their full name.
Safety Rule #2 – Know your phone number and address.
If a kid ever gets lost or separated from their grown-up, it’s super helpful if they can give out their parent’s contact number. If they ever have to call 9-1-1, knowing their address is essential. Learning their basic contact info is vital for safety preparedness, especially as they move from preschoolers to big kids.
Safety Rule #3 – Use your safety tools.
There are many safety tools that kids use every day: bike helmets, seatbelts, sidewalks, etc. Teaching them to be aware of the safety tools in their environments and the importance of using those tools EVERY time will go a long way toward keeping them safe.
Safety Rule #4 – Practice the plans.
There are a lot of safety plans at school. There are fire drills, tornado drills, code-red drills, and more. Teach kids the plans and the importance of knowing the plans. Teach them the importance of taking safety practice importantly at school and home.
Safety Rule #5 – Know how to call for help.
Kids need to know when and how to call for help. They need to know how to dial 9-1-1, why to call, and what to say. Knowing how to dial 9-1-1 and what to say will make getting help if they ever need it much easier.
Well, friends – there is no magic solution to keeping kids safe, but knowing these five basic safety rules is a good start. Hopefully, you can get started teaching safety to your kiddos with these tips.
