Butterfly Life Cycle Vocabulary Words
Because your kids will probably encounter new words as you teach about butterfly life cycles, pre-teaching the vocabulary is important. It will help your students understand everything else in the unit.
Vocabulary posters and word wall cards provide picture support. Also, the simple definitions are excellent reference tools for kids.
Vocabulary puzzles and fill-in-the-blank worksheets let kids practice the new vocabulary words. Also, they make a center activity.

Books About The Life Cycle Of A Butterfly
Fabulous picture books are a must for any unit. They’re great for read-alouds. Not to mention, kids like reading them. These are some of my favorite ones for teaching all about butterflies.
Another fun butterfly life cycle activity is creating a mini-book. It’s a great way to dive into everything about butterflies. It breaks the content into bite-sized chunks. Additionally, it incorporates activity pages to help build comprehension. Plus, kids love taking it home to share what they’re learning with their families.

Online Butterfly Life Cycle Activities
If you have the tech, there are tons of online resources to explore. Try an online activity like this one. Or, try a video like this one on pollinators. A short video during snack time is an easy way to get more science into your day.
Hatch Butterflies In Your Classroom
Hatching butterflies is a great way to get hands-on. If you haven’t done it before, it’s not hard. Just order a kit online. My kiddos LOVED watching their caterpillars grow into butterflies and then releasing them.
Another option is taking a field trip to a butterfly garden or exhibit. We went. The kids fed the butterflies with cotton swabs. It was definitely a hit!
Butterfly Observation Journal
If you decide to hatch butterflies, an observation journal is an awesome tool. It will encourage your students to make careful observations. Before you get the caterpillars, start with a short reading passage. Next, give the caterpillar care quiz. Then, start observing the caterpillars.
Your students will observe the caterpillars. They’ll record observations with drawings and a sentence or two each day. They’ll also record the dates of important events in the life cycle of a butterfly, like molting, forming a chrysalis, and emerging as butterflies.

“My students come in every day and are so excited to overserve their caterpillar! This resource provides a great way for them to draw and write about their observations independently!”

Butterfly Life Cycle Writing Craft
Incorporate writing with a fun writing craftivity. It’s a great way to introduce kids to the research process. Use the trade books from your read-alouds to find facts. Of course, the mini-book is great for this too. Easily differentiate the activity by assigning your class a simple banner pennant, a flipbook, or a paragraph. Afterward, hang them up for a great spring-themed classroom display!
