by April Leave a Comment (Edit)
February is here, and that means many teachers are searching for lesson ideas on popular February topics: Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, kindness, dental health, and black history.
So, I’ve gathered together some related resources to give you some ideas and save you time. (Freebies are linked at the bottom of this post.)
February Book Recommendations

We’re big readers in my house (except the kindergartener, who prefers listening to stories.) And going to the bookstore is one of our favorite family outings.
On our most recent trip to the bookstore, I picked out some new seasonal books to add to my collection. I love these three picture books because they connect to February topics, and they pair with specific skills or concepts.
- Counting on Katherine – This biography focuses on Katherine Johnson, an accomplished African-American woman who rocked it in a STEM field. I really love how relatable this book is (it reads like a story.) I also love its connections with science, math, and history topics.
- So You Want to Be President? – This book is jam-packed with info, but it still manages to be interesting. I can see it being paired with a lesson about the presidents or with writing prompts like, “Why would you be a good president?” or “What makes a good president?”
- Words and Your Heart – This book has such a great message. It’s all about how words impact people’s hearts. It’s sweet, simple, and delivers a powerful message.
February Activities To Try
Seasonal topics help keep the classroom fresh. They’re great for getting kids excited and engaged. These are some free February activities to try.
Groundhog Day
February kicks off with a fun little holiday: Groundhog Day. It’s always a fun topic for primary-grade kiddos.
What kid doesn’t like a cute, furry little critter that makes predictions?
These worksheets require NO PREP and are perfect for kindergarten or first-grade kiddos. They cover simple sentence writing and shapes.
Valentine’s Day
Just about every elementary school classroom does something for Valentine’s Day. Among adults, Valentine’s Day is usually associated with romance, but in the classroom, it’s all about friendship, cards, and kindness.
These two themed worksheets focus on CVC words and building teens with ten frames.
Presidents’ Day
Another big day in February is Presidents’ Day. While it was originally created to celebrate George Washington, it’s a great chance to honor all of our presidents and teach our kiddos about them.
These president wheels cover the names of every U.S. president, the dates they served, and a few fun facts.
Dental Health
Smile! It’s Dental Health Month, and that means it’s a good time to cover an important health topic: teeth. (Encouraging our kids to learn good hygiene is always a good thing.)
This free tooth shape book introduces kids to the parts and layers of a tooth.
Black History
Maybe one day, textbooks and history resources will fully represent the contributions of all parts of our society, but most don’t yet. So, Black History Month is an opportunity to take some time to learn about some of the contributions of African Americans throughout our nation’s history.
This craftivity project focuses on George Washington Carver. After kids learn about his contributions, they can write about him under the peanut guy. The finished projects are great for displaying in the hallway.
