How to Make and Use Salt Dough

Have you ever tried making salt dough? It’s a fabulous material for creating projects with kids. It’s cheap, quick to make, and can be used in many different ways. I love that!

How To Make Salt Dough

It is surprisingly easy to make. You don’t have to cook it; it can be ready for use in under 5 minutes.

Salt Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup of warm water

How To Make Salt Dough

Making the salt dough is very simple.

Mix The Dough
  1. Pour the flour and salt into a bowl. Mix them together.
  2. Add the warm water into the bowl and mix it with the dry ingredients.
  3. Knead the dough until it makes a nice doughy ball.

Tip: If the dough is too sticky, add more salt. It is okay if the texture is a little grainy.

Once the dough is combined, it’s ready. You can go ahead and create your projects unless you want to add food coloring, cinnamon, or even glitter first. The possibilities are endless. Get creative and have fun.

Tip: If you’re not using the dough right away, wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in a sealed plastic bag inside the refrigerator. Let it return to room temp before using it.

Creating Projects

The dough is very versatile. Once it’s dried, it can be painted or decorated.

Salt Dough Island Project

One of my favorite projects is making landform islands. Students used the dough to create islands. Students design an island that features various landforms. Once the dough dries, they paint their islands and create a map with a key identifying the various landforms.

It takes several days to air-dry larger salt dough projects. If you have a smaller project that isn’t attached to paper or cardboard, you can bake it at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours instead of air drying. The amount of time it will take to dry all the way through will depend on the thickness of your project.

My students and I loved this landform activity! They were engaged and excited to complete this activity.
