This leprechaun craft focuses on narrative writing, with students creating a story using the writing prompt, “If I were a leprechaun.” The writing prompt is a great way to get your little guys thinking creatively as they plan out their stories.
Themed with shamrocks, the graphic organizers will guide your students to create a story with a beginning, middle, and end that includes a problem and a solution. They’ll help your kids organize their creative ideas and develop their stories by expanding the plot and encouraging them to think about which vocabulary words to include in their stories.
You’ll love how your students are guided through the writing process with graphic organizers, stationery, and step-by-step directions for the simple leprechaun craft. They’ll grow their writing skills. Plus, it’s a fun way for young children to build their fine motor skills. They’ll cut and curl paper pieces to create hair and/or make a leprechaun beard.
Then, they’ll each create their own leprechaun by folding green paper to form the shirt and adding the leprechaun’s hat and face to it. They’ll use a glue stick to attach it to the background and then add the pots of gold and gold coins to finish off this simple craft. Once their writing is attached to the background, you’ll have an easy and adorable piece of student work to display.
This easy craft pairs well with other fun St. Patrick’s Day activities you might be doing in your classroom. Some fun ideas you might try pairing with it include building a leprechaun trap, designing a leprechaun hat, or reading aloud your favorite books about Irish folklore.
You won’t need a craft closet full of cotton balls, toilet paper rolls, or a batch of homemade puffy paint. All you need are some simple supplies you probably already have.
The only craft supplies you’ll need for this easy project are colored craft paper, scissors, and glue. Plus, you’ll need some plain white copy paper and a pencil for the writing worksheets. Of course, your students can get creative and add pom poms, shamrocks, 4-leaf clovers, or a colorful rainbow to their projects. Either way, this fun activity is sure to be a hit.
