Classroom Activity Ideas for March

Oh my goodness, It’s almost March. The year is flying by, and spring is just around the corner. So, let’s check out some resources, freebies, and ideas to help make your March lesson planning easier.

March Picture Book Suggestions

Connecting kids with books that they want to read is a huge part of growing readers, and seasonal topics like holidays hold interest for many kids. Plus, picture books are a great way to introduce kids to different genres, new vocabulary words, and complex language.

My older daughter’s book club has a theme each month. March’s theme was Irish folktales and folklore. While not all of these books are traditional Irish tales, they are fun to read and perfect for March. (This post contains affiliate links.)

If I Were A Leprechaun: A March Writing Activity

Next, let’s talk about writing. I have a thing for combining crafting and writing. Maybe it’s just that I love to create, but I think adding a little bit of crafting helps get kids excited about writing.

First, read aloud one or more of the picture books from above. Then, brainstorm with your kids. Have they heard about leprechauns? What do they think leprechauns do? If they were leprechauns, what would they do?

Use graphic organizers to help your students plan their writing and pick some new vocabulary words to include in their stories. Then, give them some time to get creative.

Once they’ve written their stories, they can use the step-by-step directions to create the leprechaun craftivity and publish their writings. The craftivity makes a great seasonal display!
